What is Undocumented Student Action Week (USAW)?

  • Undocumented Student Action Week is an annual week-long effort designed to engage and activate students, faculty, staff, and administrators to support the needs of undocumented students enrolled in California community colleges.
  • A joint collaboration between the Chancellor’s Office, Foundation for California Community Colleges, and Community College League of California, Undocumented Student Action Week provides an opportunity to uplift the inspiring stories of undocumented students and share them with local, state, and federal policymakers.
  • Undocumented Student Action Week began in 2016 in response to the threat of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program and the emerging antagonistic views towards immigrants by the previous federal administration.
  • The effort has now become a permanent celebration to build greater awareness of and support for policies that support undocumented student success.
  • Through these conversations, we are able to share real life examples of stories where policies are positively shaping the lives of our undocumented students and express our continued solidarity.
  • For far too long, our undocumented students have felt powerless when encountering barriers to education—from racism, to lack of federal financial aid, to fear of deportation.
  • Undocumented Student Action Week is about helping colleges to recognize and remove those barriers, so students can find success and transform their lives.
  • Immigrants are the fabric of our community and deserve a fair and equitable opportunity to follow their dreams. They are aspiring medical professionals, lawmakers, community leaders, engineers, teachers, scientists, and entrepreneurs. They are crucial to our state and nation’s economic prosperity and growth.
  • Removing barriers for our undocumented students “is an investment in our conveyor belt for talent – the finest system of higher education in the world, our community colleges,” as Governor Newsom stated in his 2022 State of the State.
  • By ensuring their success, undocumented students can achieve their college dreams, reach their full potential, and positively impact their families, communities, our workforce.
