Why USAW?

The California Community Colleges enrolls the largest population of undocumented students in the nation. Our faculty, staff, and administrators are vitally important to ensuring that all of our students can achieve their goals, regardless of their citizenship status. As many of you know, Undocumented Student Action Week (USAW) was created to raise awareness about the challenges that students without status encounter along their educational journey. More importantly, USAW is about discussing solutions at local, statewide, and federal levels that support their educational dreams. The events are intended to inform our colleges and allies about how they can build a strong ecosystem that breaks down silos and promotes a collaborative campus approach to support the success of our undocumented students.

Staff & Faculty Event:
UNDOCUADVOCATE TRAINING

In this session you will learn "Why Our College’s Campus Culture Matters” as well as different strategies that can be implemented in our classrooms, departments, and the college campus at large to support our students of undocumented and mixed status.

Together we will explore the following topics:
  • Equity beyond a status: An anthropological look at undocumented students.
  • Standardizing language and terminology for prepared California education systems.
  • Importance of immigrant student success for communities and for California.
  • Common pitfalls and barriers to immigrant student equity.
